Definition

Subject heading is a word or phrase from a controlled vocabulary which is sed to describe the subject of a document or a class of documents

Function

Subject headings provide subject access to bibliographic records in the OPAC of the LRC. LRC's patrons can find different items of the same subject by clicking on the subject headings provided in bibliographic records. Subject headings improve search precision and support scientific research.

Structure

A subject heading may consist of one or more words. A one-word heading represents a single concept, whereas a multiple-word heading may represent a single concept or multiple concepts.

  • Single - concept headings: A subject heading appearing as a single word or a multiple-word phrase, usually an adjectival phrase but occasionally a prepositional phrase represents a single concept.

Example: Flowers, rice, television, education...

  • Pre- coordinated multiple- concept headings: A pre-coordinated multiple-concept heading contains two or more otherwise individual or independent concepts coordinated or related through one or more linking devices. Pre-coordination results in phrase headings or main-heading/subdivision combinations. There are 4 main types of subdivisions: topical, form, chronological, and geographical subdivisions

Example:

Subject headings as the combinations of main-heading/ topical subdivisions:

VIỆT NAM

- Politics

- History

- Language

Subject headings as the combinations of main-heading/ chronological subdivisions:

VIETNAMESE LITERATURE

- Before 1930 -1945
